This started out as the story of my search for a Maicomobil scooter. It turned into an online magazine for vintage scooters and three wheelers.
In the world of 1950s bulbous scooters, Maicomobil is king. I bought one in 1984 but had to sell it in 1992 when times were hard. Perhaps that old Maicomobil now represents a nostalgia for good times and a younger me? I decided to find another one.
But that’s not as easy as it seems: they’ve now become one of the most expensive vintage scooters. I tried to buy several on German ebay needing total restoration, but my bid was left behind at the last minute. I now have my sights set on one whose picture looks so bleak I’m sure I’m in with a chance.
Restored scooters are fine and dandy; but unrestored piles of bits are real life. The auction ends in a few hours. I’m biting my nails.
In fact, this scoot looks SO bleak it’s become the theme for this online magazine – it’s photographed in Germany, in snow and (gasp) it’s completely naked. This is what a beautiful Maicomobil looks like under all that bulbousness.
…Maybe there’s a Naked Maicomobil inside us all?

Well, all that bleak stuff was written in the middle of winter. Let’s balance it out with a nice summery scooter picture…
